Yoel Young – Handling his busy schedule of school and lustrous music career ahead

Between a full course load in school, homework, and a burgeoning career as a singer and songwriter, the 17-year-old Nepali artist barely has time.

“At times it’s stressful with all the work, but at the end of the day  music is things I love,” Yoel said as he has pursued it since childhood.

If it came down to it, Yoel wants to become a full-time musician. That choice is probably the right one, given the glowing online reviews her music has received.

It all started last year when Yoel took advantage of the  microphone he had at home to produce his first album titled “Temporary Pain.” He decided to put a few of the songs on Soundcloud to see what kind of reception they would get.

“We didn’t really expect it to turn into anything, but then we started getting more plays than we expected,” Yoel said of the songs, where he showcases her unique voice as well as her piano and guitar skills. “So we released the whole album on SoundCloud and then later on iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora.”

Yoel describes her music as “Melodic Rap.” He says the feedback he received has been resoundingly positive, with many people impressed with the depth of his lyrics.

“They like how my music talks about more than what a lot of rap music talks about today. It goes deeper and sends a message,” Yoel explained.

When The Jersey Journal caught up with Young, he was preparing to leave for Kathmandu, where he was set to perform a showcase — a performance for music industry types who might be interested in signing Yoel to a record deal.

In terms of inspiration, Young says a lot of his music is grounded in life experiences. On his album, Yoel sings about the emotions felt when his older sister left for. Yoel considers writing songs about his life experiences “therapeutic.”

“When I write about something that is bothering me, it will make me feel better about my problems,” he said.

Yoel says her 8-track album tells the story of a sad person who overcomes negative emotions and figures out a new way to approach life. He says she wants it to feel “empowering.”

“He puts out albums and is really popular and gets to do a lot of shows and inspire people with his music, but he kind of stays out of the spotlight,” Yoel says of his idol. “He’s not really so obsessed with being famous, it is more about the music. That is how I feel.

“I would like a lot of people to hear my music, but it is not about the glamour of stardom or anything like that.”

For now, Yoel is writing new songs and preparing to release her second album. He says he is exploring his options and beginning to work with other producers.

“I’m kind of seeing what my options are and just seeing what path I want to go,” Yoel said. “If I either want to sign with a label or if I want to go the indie way and build it myself. It’s all up in the air right now.”

That being said, Yoel knows where he wants to be in the future.

“My goal is to pursue a career in music. I want to be a singer and songwriter. I want to be performing for crowds and releasing albums.”
